Why Defensive Driver Education Matters

By John Meola, CSP, ARM

As the weather gets colder and inclement road conditions become more likely, it is essential to remember the importance of defensive driving. Regardless of the size of your company’s vehicle fleet or area of operations, transportation related accidents account for a majority of the claims and occupational fatalities each year. To throw some figures at you:

  • Approximately 40% of annual occupational fatalities are transportation related
  • Another 22% derive from “Roadway” related incidents
  • This translates to nearly two-thirds of all work related fatalities arising from vehicles, traffic, travel, highway work zones, machinery or related exposures.

The lesson learned from these statistics is fairly straightforward: Defensive Driver Education should be a prominent feature of any Safety Program. If you don’t currently have a program in place or haven’t reviewed your program recently, please contact us so that we can help.
